Popular Irish Songs

Popular Irish Songs

The songs of Ireland enjoy popularity far beyond the shores of the Emerald Isle. Rich with melody, sentiment, and lively spirit, they warm the hearts and lift the spirits of all who sing them. Here is a collection of the best of those songs, including the most popular Irish-American songs from the turn of the century.Several of the songs are from Thomas Moore's Irish Melodies, including "'Tis the Last Rose of Summer," "The Minstrel Boy," and "Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms." Patriotic songs like "The Wearing of the Green" and comic songs such as "Who Threw the Overalls in Mistress Murphy's Chowder" are included, along with such popular favorites as "Danny Boy," "My Wild Irish Rose," "Sweet Rosie O'Grady" and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling."This treasury of 36 songs will add a true touch of Irish spirit to St. Patrick's Day gatherings and every kind of songfest where singers gather to share songs of universal appeal. They are reprinted here in piano arrangements with complete lyrics, most of them with their original sheet-music covers. A new Introduction includes background notes on the history of each of these memorable songs.

West Midlands' Ballads

West Midlands' Ballads

Price: 17.95

This book is a collection of ballads, which begs the question: What is a ballad? Forget the modern usage, meaning 'a slow, sentimental song'. This is a misuse of the ancient word 'baler' derived from the Old French via Middle English, meaning to dance, and later used as a poem or song performed as an accompaniment to dancing. These usually narrated a popular story and today the story element is the prime feature. If a song tells a story it can be called a ballad.

Classic English Folk Songs

Classic English Folk Songs

Price: 17.00

First published in 1959 as The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs, this groundbreaking collection reclaimed traditional song from the school and the recital room, and from the ‘evening dress’ into which it had so often been put during the first half of the twentieth century.

Drawing on material collected mainly in the early years of that century and originally published in the Journal of The Folk Song Society and its successor the Journal of The English Folk Dance and Song Society, the editors compiled a selection that revealed the vitality and beauty of English folk song in its natural form.

The book was enormously influential in the folk song revival and was regularly reprinted over some thirty years. The notes to the songs have been revised with much new information, and biographical details of the singers from whom the songs were noted have been added.

Selected and Edited by R Vaughan Williams and A L Lloyd, revised by Malcolm Douglas.
Foreword by Martin Carthy.

Appalachian Traditional Songs and Singers from the Cecil Sharp Collection with detailed essay on Sharp in America.

Cecil James Sharp (1859-1924) was England's most prolific folk music and dance collector in what is now widely known as the First Folk Revival. Between the time of Sharp's first serious collecting experience in a Somerset vicarage garden in August 1903, until his death on Midsummer Eve, 1924, he amassed a total of 4,977 tunes in England and North America, many of which were published in various forms in order to promote and revive what was perceived to be a fading part of traditional culture.

Sharp's North American collection is regarded as a landmark in folk music fieldwork and the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library (VWML) are making available online access to Cecil Sharp's only surviving personal diaries in which he describes his collecting experiences in the Appalachian Mountains.

Compiled and edited by Mike Yates, Elaine Bradtke and Malcolm Taylor.

Preface by Shirley Collins.

Marrow Bones

Marrow Bones

Price: 15.95

English Folk Songs from the Hammond and Gardiner Manuscripts

Marrow Bones was first published in 1965, drawing on the extensive and largely unpublished folk song collections made by Henry and Robert Hammond and Dr George Gardiner between 1904 and 1909, chiefly in Dorset and Hampshire, which are held in the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library at Cecil Sharp House. It was followed by three more volumes of selections from the manuscripts, edited by Frank Purslow and published by EFDSS in the late 60s and early 70s.

In 2007 the revised and corrected edition of Marrow Bones was published, which was followed by The Wanton Seed (2015) and Southern Harvest (2017). Southern Harvest is an omnibus volume containing The Constant Lovers and The Foggy Dew which completes the revised series.

These are songs of comedy and tragedy, of love fulfilled and love denied, of war and peace, of land and sea, of the marvellous and the mundane. Songs both great and small that our ancestors took to their hearts and made part of their lives, which may very well have been lost forever. They are presented here for new generations of singers and musicians. Some are very old, others less so. They world that made them is gone, but they speak to the human condition today just as they did a century and more ago.

Selected and edited by Frank Purslow
Revised with new notes and commentaries by Malcolm Douglas and Steve Gardham
Broadside Bibliography by David Atkinson
Biographical essays by Frank Purslow and Derek Schofield
Foreword by Vic Gammon

Includes notes on the songs and an index of first lines

A selection of tunes collected by the eminent folk song collector George Butterworth.

Edited from the Butterworth manuscripts by Michael Dawney.

One of England's most distinctive composers, George Butterworth was born on 12 July 1885 in London. His involvement with English folk music and dance began post-Royal College of Music study and his close friendship and collaboration with a leading figure in this burgeoning movement, Ralph Vaughan Williams, was central to this. Butterworth became a collector, noting down more than 450 items, including songs, dance tunes, and dances. In 1906 he joined the Folk-Song Society and later became a prominent figure in the English Folk Dance Society, of which he was one of the founders in 1911, as well as a member of its dance demonstration team. He collected and arranged an album of Sussex folk songs and, in collaboration with Cecil Sharp, published several books of country and morris

English Folk Songs from the Hammond and Gardiner Manuscripts.

First published by the English Folk Dance and Song Society as a series of four slim volumes, until the first volume, Marrow Bones, was re-published to great acclaim in 2007.

Subsequent research by Malcolm Douglas and Steve Gardham has added new information to the original volumes and The Wanton Seed has been substantially revised for this edition. Malcolm Douglas died in 2009 and it is to his memory that this volume is respectfully dedicated.
